Obstructive Sleep Apnea

There are different types of Sleep Apnea.  The most common is Obstructive Sleep Apnea.  This is caused by an extreme narrowing or complete closing of the airway.  This most commonly occurs in the throat area behind the tongue.  This disease is most commonly characterized by periods of loud snoring followed by silence, then by gasping as the patient struggles for breath.  Severe sleep apnea has been linked to:

Severe daytime drowsiness

Listless, tired all the time feeling

Increased blood pressure

Increased risk of heart attacks

Increased risk of stroke

Diabetes

Early onset Alzheimers disease

Death
